The UmPhafa Nature Reserve is managed by the UmPhafa Conservation Trust and funded by Colchester Zoological Society, working to carry out the vision:
“To conserve biodiversity within the UmPhafa Nature Reserve and empower present and future generations to protect natural heritage for the long term.”
The mission is:
“To safeguard UmPhafa as a protected biodiversity area, promoting the conservation of indigenous and endangered flora and fauna, and implementing conservation education programmes that secure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
2026 – 2030 Strategy
Throughout 2026 – 2030, work will be focused on six key strategic areas:
Conserving Wildlife
Preserve species and protect flora and fauna through maintaining a healthy gene pool, monitoring and introduction of threatened species, introduction of native species, contributions to leading edge research and physical protection of species on UmPhafa.
Hosting Conservationists
Promote UmPhafa as an educational destination for international and local interns and researchers looking
to complete or enhance
their studies as well as being
a key link to other
similar conservation
organisations.
Conservation & Community
Build and develop relationships with local communities and collaborative partners through employment and engagement with the local community.
Ensuring Our Future
Through the implementation of these strategic areas, UmPhafa will develop and evolve, enabling us to promote UmPhafa as a principal Conservation / Education reserve through netwroking, funding, social interactions and promotion to the international and local communities.
Sustainability of Our Habitat
Habitat improvement via the eradication of alien plant species, using effective and established methods of erosion and fire control to improve the grazing value of vegetation whilst also promoting the use of recycled and environmentally friendly processes.
Reserve Compliance
Ensure adherence to all compliance areas, HR, admin, permits, vehicles, finances, annual and quarterly reports as and when
required.
