Following a game count in August, we were delighted to see that the herd of buffalo has swelled to 41 individuals. In January, this year we had just 31.
We introduced just 16 in 2023 and a further 9 in 2024! Unfortunately, we know we have lost 1 baby and 2 adults but the increase in 2026 has been amazing.
Buffalo are very important to UmPhafa Nature Reserve to maintain the health, biodiversity, and balance of grasslands and wetlands.
However, we need to increase the herd by quite a few to get the impact we require for the reserve. Next year, we are hoping to bring in a further 10 animals.
