Four New Species at UmPhafa! - UmPhafa

In the last month, we have identified four new species at the Reserve with the help of iNaturalist!

As part of our ongoing monitoring, anything that moves has a picture taken so we can continue to add to the Species List of UmPhafa.

Long-tongued Horsefly

Found in the Old-World genus Philoliche, it is noted for having the longest extension of the labium used to obtain nectar.

Mottled Painted Reed Frog
(Hyperolius marmoratus marmoratus)

This species is a small, highly adaptable amphibian native to eastern Southern Africa. Famous for its striking and highly variable colour-changing abilities, it thrives in environments ranging from the grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal.

Warrior Acraea
(Tildia acara)

The UmPhafa Team saw the larva as per this picture which has a colourful warning appearance and has the ability to digest highly toxic host plants. When he grows up he will turn into this beautiful butterfly recognised by its warm orange and black patterns, it thrives in woodlands, forest edges, and local gardens.

Redleg Centipede
(Cormocephalus nitidus)

This species is a large, predatory centipede native to South Africa. It is known for its dark body and bright red-orange legs. It is a voracious, nocturnal predator that feeds primarily on small insects and invertebrates. While venomous and capable of a painful bite, it is generally shy and typically only bites when trapped or handled.
